Coffee Shop Addict

Ok... It's been a week or so and I haven't been as active on the blog as I had hoped... Not from lack of motivation, procrastination or the like, but more cause life stuffs and various events have cropped up. So it's only today that I can get back to it.

And for this "comeback", the topic is going to be about lifestyle. People who know me are going to smile cause I'm not really a lifestyle person, not one that follow trends...
Am more of a lone wolf or if we stay in the animal kingdom analogies, a salmon that swims against the flow. But by lifestyle I mean trends and habits Mauritians are taking lately.

One of these, is the adoption of the coffee shop meetings. Again people who know me will surely confirm that one of my favorite place is Vida E Caffe... Be it at Bagatelle, Phoenix or anywhere else. And what I've noticed a lot lately is that this is becoming more and more common.

Just take a coffee and sit at one of the tables or side seats and sip. Within 10 mins max, you will notice people coming in for discussions. Be it business meetings, project discussion or anything else, but for sure you won't be able to leave the coffee shop without seeing at least one of those.

Now this is not really because they like coffee; Mauritians, blame it on our British colonial past, are still a tea drinking society. Few Mauritians are coffee lovers, and addicted to it.

My guess would be the following:

  • ease with which these meetings can be organised.
  • pretty sure that you'll always find a free spot
  • centralised location or at least known
  • and most importantly, I would say the increasing number of people working from home or having side businesses with no office.

The last one seems to be the main reason, cause if you look well, you'll see that those meetings are mostly from freelance or people running business out of their homes. From time to time you might even see people discussing "emerging" business... i.e. the business is being setup right now and they are talking business plans etc...

For my part I've seen my fair share of meetings there... From sports event planning to event planners and event organisers meeting with clients and somehow, that is a nice thing.

For one it's keeping those coffee shops alive with people. It's changing into a more modern way of doing business, less formal, more direct interactions.

And best of all, all along, you are able to have some fine brew to sip.
